How do you publish an audio book in Australia?

How do you publish an audio book in Australia?

Audio book Publishing contract

So, you have chosen a quality recording studio like Magic Studios to bring your audio book to life and recorded it. Now what?

Publishing audiobooks in Australia can be a limited and time-consuming task. For one thing you can’t directly self-publish on the vast majority of larger international distribution channels. You are therefore limited to selecting a publication house of which there is lack of within Australia.

Typically, authors will use a 3rd party publication house to access the larger international distribution platforms like Amazon ACX.

Amazon ACX is a subsidiary of Amazon that helps authors (international only) directly self-publish audiobooks. It also offers distribution and marketing services. ACX is also the largest producer of audiobooks in the world.

ACX is currently only open to residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland who have a mailing address, valid local Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), and banking details for one of these countries to use this platform.

So, what is an audiobook publisher?

An audiobook publisher is a company will take on the financial risks of audiobook production and distribution in return for audiobook royalties.

Most e-book publication houses create a royalty share agreement. You pay a certain percentage of the sales revenue that the book receives. (Usually 20-30% of each book sale). For example, if you have a 25% royalty share scheme and the book sells for $8, the publisher gets $2 of the $8. As you can probably tell, how much money you earn depends heavily on how many sales your book does. Royalties for audiobooks are usually paid monthly. Publication of Australian audio books overseas is a minefield. Magic studios have several quality publishing partners and can assist with both domestic and international audio book publication with a range of royalty options.

There are 5 basic steps to producing and publishing and audiobook.

  1. Record your audiobook

The process of recording audiobooks involves getting a copy of the book and then using a recording studio to break it down into its component parts. You then listen to each part of the audiobook and record it one section at a time.

  1. Edit your audiobook

The audiobook must then be edited and checked, which involves removing all the bloopers and mistakes. It is then given a final check for mistakes before it can be published.

  1. Format your audiobook

Formatting audiobooks requires you to divide your audiobook into chapters and set the correct formatting for the distributors.

  1. Convert your audiobook to an MP3 format

Your audiobook needs to be turned into an MP3 file before it can be uploaded onto websites like Audible. The minimum audio standards for an audiobook are that it must be in mono and have a frequency response of at least a sample rate of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz.

The maximum background noise floor that is acceptable for audiobooks is -60dB RMS. So recording this one at home may be a no go! Magic Studios has a -82db noise floor!

  1. Publish your audiobook

To get audiobooks published in Australia, first you need to find a audiobook publisher. You then send the audiobook MP3 file and any other required files such as book cover and author bio to the audiobook publishers and they will distribute it through their audiobook outlets.

  1. Promote your audiobook

Once your audiobook is published, you’ll need to promote it like crazy! Make sure to utilise all of Audible’s promotional tools, including their Featured Titles program and Author Central page. You can also reach out to book bloggers and podcast hosts, and let them know about your audiobook. The more promo you do, the more likely it is that people will find and listen to

Looking to promote your audiobook? Here are a few tips to get you started:

  1. Make a website or blog specifically for your audiobook

You can start with audiobook publishers and distributors in Australia or and then expand out from there. Magic Studios have several that we use and recommend.
