Magic Studios Pathway to Reconciliation

While we have worked with First Nations voiceovers in the past twenty years, historically this has been limited to unique client requests.

In 2020, we made the decision to form a Reconciliation Action Plan. Our goals revolved around greater inclusivity, diversity, collaboration with, and promotion of First Nations people.

We are proud to have formed impactful and meaningful partnerships with Indigenous organisations like Noongar Radio and Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company. Through these collaborations, we actively promote incredible Indigenous Aboriginal voiceover talent to our clients.

What is Reconciliation?

The concept of reconciliation enables all Australians to contribute to the healing of the nation.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia have experienced devastating land dispossession, violence, and racism throughout the country’s colonial history.

Reconciliation is a never-ending process of fostering and strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples. This benefits all Australians.

Reconciliation Australia is the lead body for reconciliation in Australia. Their vision of reconciliation is based on five inter-related dimensions: race relations, equality and equity, unity, institutional integrity, and historical acceptance.

These five dimensions are not isolated from one another; they are intertwined, and Australia can only achieve full reconciliation by simultaneously progressing in all five dimensions.

Why Reconciliation is Important?

Reconciliation is critical to all Australians. It necessitates the community’s acknowledgment and respect for First Nations People of this land. Moreover, it is an acknowledgment of past injustices and ongoing disadvantages suffered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people since colonization.

We should remind ourselves that although we have made significant progress from the challenges for genuine change faced by previous generations of Australians, both present and future enhancements will demand equal or even greater effort. We all need to unite and continue moving forward.

The damage has been done, but there is still a way forward. History has taught us that without reconciliation, there will always be anger and hate. A better future is made by understanding the mistakes of the past and working to ensure they aren’t repeated. A person’s race should not determine how long or how well they live. In an Australia characterized by fairness, equality and cooperation between races, Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders will have the same opportunities in life as non-Indigenous individuals.

Cultivating Multicultural Inclusiveness

Issues surrounding the need for greater Indigenous Inclusivity can be further addressed through the following actions

Become Educated

The lifestyle, traditions, and customs of the First Nations people differ from one community to another. As an employer, if you begin to understand and respect these significant cultural distinctions, Indigenous employees could feel more comfortable approaching you with culturally sensitive issues that might affect their career and remain aligned with their regional traditions.

Research

Examine the approaches that businesses employ to help improve and accommodate Aboriginal people in the workplace. Check with your connections and learn about their policies, calls to action, and work environments

Establish

Provide safeguards for the rights of First Nations peoples in the workplace, as well as programs that provide access to certain resources and skill-development initiatives so that Indigenous employees can compete on an equal footing with their co-workers.

Conversate

Have conversation with your indigenous workers! There’s no better approach to learn how to create a more inclusive environment for an individual than by asking them.
