October 2017 VLOG

In this month’s Vlog we focus on why bigger isn’t always better.

We look at the benefits of using short format videos to get your message across fast in today’s time poor world.

Short format videos

What is the prefect length for and online video? It really depends on the type of web application.
Some videos work well in long formats like educational, training or instructional videos. A Ted talk is an example of this. Others need to stand out fast so that a user’s micro glance has the best chance of your video capturing their attention.
In today’s society there is so much information available to viewers. Consumers now “channel surf” the internet for content and chop and change what they are looking at fast!

So how do you keep them interested?
According to Wistia who looked at looked at 564,710 videos, and more than 1.3 billion plays for their research, anything over 2 minutes and you start to see significant viewer drop off.

Short and sweet is a safe strategy. Assume that your viewers are busy, but don’t sweat over a few seconds here and there if you’re still going to come in around the 1-2-minute mark.

The first 10 seconds are the most important.
Create an engaging branded intro so that viewers know the brand immediately and are excited about the content to follow. Include your logo and an audio branded music sting if you have one.
Finish with a strong call to action of a link to more information. If you need to have a longer video consider using a highlights reel of some of the video at the beginning to entice them to see those parts at the end. Can the video be broken into smaller “chapters” or put together as a series?

Consider Micro videos
These are 15-30 second video snippets that work very well on Facebook at other social media channels. They are essentially a cut down version of longer video used to draw the viewer in to seek more information. They work particularly well for mobile viewers and with the Facebook “feed” auto play function.

60 seconds is long enough to get information across fast.
One minute of video or around 100 words is a great place to start.
